How Is Cerakote Applied?

Cerakote is an advanced ceramic coating that can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including metals, plastics, and wood. It is known for its durability, corrosion resistance, and heat resistance, making it a popular choice for firearms, automotive parts, and even industrial equipment.

Steps for Applying Cerakote

The Application Process

The application process for Cerakote involves several steps to ensure proper adhesion and a flawless finish. These steps may vary slightly depending on the surface being coated, but generally involve the following:

  1. Upon receiving your firearm at our workshop, our first step is to ensure it's in safe working condition. If we find any safety issues, we return the firearm to you for appropriate repair by a certified gunsmith before we can proceed with our work. However, if you prefer, we can arrange for the necessary repairs through one of the licensed gunsmiths we have access to.
  2. Once we confirm that your firearm is in safe working condition, we proceed to the second step, which involves complete disassembly. This includes removing every pin, nut, screw, and spring. In cases where the barrel is attached to the firearm, it must also be removed unless you specifically request otherwise. If you choose not to have the barrel removed, you will need to sign a waiver absolving us of responsibility for the adhesion of the Cerakote coating to that particular part of the weapon.
  3. As we disassemble the firearm, we thoroughly inspect each part and make a note of any issues that could potentially affect the coating process. We will then discuss these concerns with you so that you can decide on the next steps. If all parts are deemed safe and in good working order, we move on to the third step.
  4. Please be aware that some parts, such as the front sights on certain firearms, may need replacement due to factory conditions making them non-reusable or excessively tight, which increases the risk of breakage, chipping, or other damage. While we take utmost care during the disassembly of your firearm, unforeseen issues may occasionally arise.
  5. Once we've established that all components of your firearm are in good working order, we proceed to the preparatory stage. The parts due for coating undergo a thorough cleansing in an acetone bath to eliminate all traces of oil, grease, and dirt.
  6. In applying the Cerakote coating, we maintain a light touch to avoid disturbing tight tolerances. Standard practice involves masking off pins and coating only their heads. If you prefer to have the entire pin coated, please specify this when dropping off your firearm. Be aware, however, that this might necessitate minor adjustments, such as gently sanding the pin with steel wool and lubricating it to ensure a proper fit. We're also able to plug holes upon request and accommodate any specific areas you believe may have tolerance issues.
  7. Regarding markings, any painted or lightly laser-etched details will unfortunately be lost during the cleaning and coating process. While some choose to replace these markings using model-car type paint as demonstrated in various online tutorials, we do not offer this service due to its unpredictability and lack of longevity. However, we will mask serial numbers at no additional charge when needed, or coat over them if they remain legible through the coating.
  8. Once cleaned, each part is sandblasted using fine aluminum oxide media to strip away all pre-existing coatings and create a clean surface for the Cerakote to adhere to. The parts are then transported to our coating preparation area and hung for coating. We conduct a final inspection to ensure all parts are properly cleaned and prepared before applying the Cerakote.
  9. After preparation, the parts rack is swiftly moved to the coating booth to minimize contamination risk. The Cerakote coating is applied meticulously, adhering to Cerakote's stringent standards with respect to equipment use and technique.
  10. Once the coating is applied, the parts are transferred to our baking oven to cure according to Cerakote guidelines. If stenciling is required, the relevant parts are briefly removed from the oven, stencils are applied, the appropriate color is added, and the parts are returned to the oven for the final curing process.
  11. After baking, the parts are cooled and inspected for proper coating thickness, appearance, and texture. Parts that pass our quality standards are sent to our reassembly area, where the firearm is reassembled and prepared for return to the customer. Any part that fails to meet our quality standards is returned to the third step to restart the process.

How Is Cerakote Applied? FAQs

How long does Cerakote coating last?

Cerakote is a highly durable and long-lasting coating, with an expected lifespan of at least 30 years when applied correctly. This makes it a popular choice for firearms that are frequently exposed to harsh conditions.

Can I choose any color or finish for my firearm?

Yes, our facility offers a wide range of Cerakote colors and finishes to choose from. Our expert technicians can also mix custom colors to achieve a unique look for your firearm.

How thick is the Cerakote coating?

The thickness of the Cerakote coating depends on the specific application and desired results. However, on average, it ranges from 0.001-0.002 inches (1-2 mils), making it a very thin yet durable coating.

Is Cerakote only for firearms?

While Cerakote was initially developed for military and firearm applications, it can also be used on other metal objects. Many of our customers have used Cerakote on knives, tools, car parts, and more to provide an extra layer of protection and customization.

How do I care for my Cerakote coated firearm?

Cerakote is a low-maintenance coating and requires minimal care. Simply wipe it down with a soft cloth and mild soap and water when necessary. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, as they can damage the coating.

Can I remove Cerakote if I change my mind?

Yes, Cerakote can be removed from your firearm if desired. However, it may require professional stripping and refinishing, which can be time-consuming and costly. We recommend carefully considering your color choice before applying Cerakote.

How do I know if my firearm is a good candidate for Cerakote coating?

In general, most firearms are suitable for Cerakote coating. However, it's always best to consult with our technicians to assess the condition of your firearm and determine the best course of action. We prioritize safety and quality in all our services, and we will not apply Cerakote to a firearm that is damaged or unsafe to use. Additionally, we recommend ensuring that your firearm is properly cleaned and prepared before applying Cerakote for optimal results. Our technicians are happy to provide guidance on proper preparation methods.

Can I apply Cerakote myself?

While there are DIY Cerakote kits available, we highly recommend having a professional apply the coating. The application process requires precision and knowledge of proper techniques to achieve the best results. Our team has extensive experience in applying Cerakote and can ensure a high-quality, durable finish on your firearm.

Does applying Cerakote increase water resistance?

The Cerakote coating is designed to provide additional protection against water and other liquids. However, it's important to note that it is not completely waterproof. It may offer some resistance against light moisture, but we recommend avoiding exposure to excessive amounts of water or submerging your firearm in liquid even with the coating applied.
